Professor Helen Skouteris

Professor and Head of the Health and Social Care Unit, Monash University

Helen Skouteris is the Monash Warwick Alliance Joint Professor of Health and Social Care Improvement and Implementation Science, Head of the Health and Social Care Unit, and Co-Lead of the Division of Evidence Synthesis, Qualitative and Implementation Methods, School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Monash University, Australia. Helen is also Director of the National Health and Medical Research Council Centre of Research Excellence in Health in Preconception and Pregnancy (CRE HiPP 2020-2024), Editor-in-Chief of Health and Social Care in the Community, Board Director elect of the Global Implementation Society and Chair, Parent Infant Research Institute.

A developmental and health psychologist, Helen is an internationally esteemed and one of Australia’s leading maternal and childhood obesity researcher whose research spans preconception, pregnancy, postpartum, childhood and adolescence, with a focus on psychosocial and lifestyle health.  Her research predominantly focuses on building agency/capacity in ‘the consumer’ to make healthy lifestyle choices, to reduce the burden of obesity.  Her work also focuses extensively on social service and educational sector improvement that translates to better health outcomes for children, young people, adults and families, and is critical to transforming policy across these sectors.

Helen holds a strong track record in longitudinal multi-factorial research, randomised controlled trials, implementation research and higher degree research supervision. She has led large scale programs and brings expertise in intervention mapping, behavioural theory, qualitative research, implementation science, co-design and implementation of systems level and policy change.  All projects are co-designed with consumer and community engagement at all stages, and she has consolidated ongoing industry research partnerships with significant industry funding to work on improving outcomes for those they serve.
