Stream 2 – Efficient and equitable resource allocation
Childhood obesity affects some population groups more than others and there are limited funds allocated for disease prevention. So, it’s important that we know how to make use of the limited resources on interventions that provide the best value for money and are most likely to reduce inequities.
We have developed a model (the EPOCH model) to estimate the economic and health consequences of reducing obesity in early childhood. Using big data, we will extend the EPOCH model to determine the cost and quality of life trajectories for Australian children living with disadvantage. The enhanced EPOCH model would allow us to understand the costs and benefits of interventions for different population groups. We also work with policymakers, parents, practitioners and communities to understand what outcomes are most valued for different groups.
Our work in Stream 2 will guide policymakers and health planners to design the most cost-effective and valued childhood obesity prevention interventions. It will also be useful to policymakers to inform strategies for the best and fairest allocation of resources to reduce obesity and inequities in Australian children.
